Let's do Doom Pt5: Cyberdemon by Mechanubis Let's do Doom Pt5: Cyberdemon by Mechanubis
Turned out crap :/ But I was tired of redoing this piece for the umpteenth million time, so whatever.

Am I the only one who loved the "Oh shit!"-sensation when you one of these bad boys appeared out of no where, and you'd desperately tried to hit the 8-key while simultaneously ran around the level like an idiot, trying to dodge the incoming rocketfire?

And this is an awesome design!

I think i would've appreciated ol' cybie a lot more if he (and some of the other Doom denizens) looked more like this. Many of the D3 monster designs seemed rather uninspired compared to the originals. Would be cool to see some of these modeled out and dropped in game... :ahoy:

Thanks. I have a few of these monsters modeled. Just haven't gotten around to rigging the damn things :P

what do you think of the cyberdemon's design in the new doom trailer that came out a few days ago?

Brutal as fvck! A little upset that it was just a pre-rendered trailer, but then again that seems to be the thing nowadays. I'm sporting a massive boner for the next Quakecon, tho :3

Propably not. I'm not familiar with exporting animations into engines. Nor animating for that matter.

Ah- I can understand that- they are headache's unto themselves. I used to plink around with Doom back when I was in college, it's importer was... finicky, but I managed to get some stuff working. Just took a few weeks of abject frustration and some reading (hoping the new one'll be a bit more forgiving). I would suggest trying out animation though if you ever get the chance (and if it's not too forward of me to suggest that). Always brought me a perverse sense of pride to see my creations up and moving around (and in the case of in-game stuff, chasing me ). Might be fun

Cheers :ahoy:

Animating would be fun, but I still have so much to learn in 3D-modeling and concept drawing, so I don't think I'll be tackling that particular bear any time soon. But you're right, it isn't until you see your creations bumpling about until you feel like your work was worth a damn. It would be neat to be a part of some Doom-remake project, but mod-projects simply die in 99,99% of the cases. So I might be better off throwing my 2 cents into some other corner of the creative spectrum.

HELL YES!  Granted, the Cyberdemon in Doom 3 was the ONE monster they did some justice to, but this would have been so intimidating to face off with in the final moments of the game!

Nice! IMO they should get you to design the creatures for Doom 4 :)

I would love to see an Icon of Sin. Like just this gigantic goat head god beast. Its kinda what I got from your "tormented" picture.

I'd love to stick my fingers into the Doom4-soup and add my personal spices. But I have strong faith in Id-Software.

I am going to eventually do the Icon of Sin, but right now I'm sorta struggling with my computer, so I've laid off the Doom arts to do some more simple practices :/ Cheers, brother.

Hey don't worry about it. I've been doing some Doom art for my on and off again Doom RPG project, but I had to put it on hold due to the computer with majority of my art on it being destroyed. I know how you feel. Happens to us all!

impressive but I prefer Doom 3s version...the Cyberdemon is meant to be Hell's MIGHTIEST WARRIOR!!! not only a boss, not only a commander when it comes to the invasion of Earth but their mightiest warrior...unlike in the classic Doom game there is only 1 of him...(later on in the old Doom games u see more Cyberdemons...but they are weaker) but the 1 Cyberdemon u meet....holy cow that thing is enormous and not even the BFG hurts him

Nothing wrong with the design of Doom 3's Cyberdemon. I liked it a lot and used it as a reference. But it was a shame that he was one of the easiest monsters in the game, despite the fact that Id Software cheated and forced players to use the boring soulcube thingy :'C

Thanks for the comment :)

yes but when u think about the fact ONLY the soulcube hurts him...that makes him incredibly powerful...and the fact u had to go to such hard lengths to get that soulcube. he is only easy on easy mode...to be fair, if they made him as hard as he was on insane...he'd be impossible firstly it doesn't take 2 or 3 soulcube hits to kill him on insane...it takes 6 I think add to that he deal double damage...yeah

Maybe I'm just thinking about it from gameplay's point of view. But I just feel cheated when a game dumps a whole new rule into the mix in the final boss. Granted, it wasn't as bad as some other final bosses like in the first God of War or Killzone 2. But I wanted to fight him and not the little imps and maggots that kept spawning in, while he was strolling somewhere behind the rocks :'C

Easy only in easy mode? Really? I though he was just as easy on Veteran as well, since there is so much room to manouver and half the level is blocking his view. Maybe I just got lucky then : D

half the level is blocking his way in the classic doom as well because there is a giant building in the middle of the arena and you circle around it...so really all they did was turn the building into a pit and turn the building into the cyberdemon :D

"Crap"...
"Crap".......
"CRAP"?!
:|

You need a brain redo, because that certainly IS NOT CRAP.
This Cyberdemon is absolutely BUUTTTIFUL. X33 I really love the horns in this one, since they look so different to the usual shapes. I like how you've 'upgraded' the machinery parts, but didn't stray too far from the original, iconic appearance. Amazing rough texture as well.

That face plate and those back cracked barky-spikes is an interesting addition as well.

And, hah, is that a ruined loincloth? XD That's hilarious.

Well I'm glad you like it, and people have been really supportive about this piece. It's just that it turned out to be completely something else that I had in mind. It felt like I had taken a step backwards, since I'm trying my best to capture the image in my head.

But it's heartwarming that people like it. And I appreciate that to a tremendous degree :)

Loincloths are the fucking BOSS! B)

You gotta wonder how a Cyberdemon is "made".
It would be interesting if it started out as a reoccurring Hellknight/Baron that escapes before you can kill it.

Apparently, the first Cyberdemon was originally a strong, but regular demon, and appeared in a wolfenstein game, Spear of Destiny I think it was and was called the Harbinger of Doom, or something like that. BJ blows off an arm and a leg of the Harbinger, who vows that BJ is worthy of the Spear, but that he (Harbinger) will return to haunt his relatives.

...So, patch up Harbinger nearly 200 years later, and hello Cyberdemon!

Indeed that would be cool. Although I kind of like the idea of "Hell's champion" a creature that has killed things for millenias and built itself from the remains of it's vanquished enemies. Nevertheless, your idea is indeed quite badass.
