Like the Cacodaemon, I decided to deviate a lot from the sourcematerial for a number of reason. First and foremost, I wanted to create a significant gap between the Mastermind and the Arachnotron. Second of all, I wanted to give this guy a lot more imposing appearance, thus making it more like a Centaur. Then I replaced the minigun (which in this case, would have been located in this guys crotch) with mounted dual pulserifles! Because if there is anything more awesome than miniguncock or rocketlaunchertits, it's dual wieding pulserifles! I'll work on the butt some more when I'll start working on the model itself. Now it looks way too normal. Need to make it look hellish and sick.

This is EPIC! you should work for ID's art department and be working on the demon concepts for DOOM 4. This version of the Spider M could fit very nicely into DOOM 3. Hell i would pay to see it in game!!

he looks powerful...and he would be cool to appear in a Doom 4 (I really hope he does if they make a Doom 4...I was annoyed they took out a few enemies like the Pain Elemental and of course...this guy.) does this design even have guns though?...it looks like he only has blades?

no enemy is insignificant in my mind...they are all part of the legion of hell, the only ones who are possibly insignificant are the possessed marines and zombies because they are just used...but all the others: the lost souls, forgotten ones, imps, wraiths, maggots, vulgars, gargoyles (only appeared in the old doom), pinky demon, cacodemon, pain elementals, revenants, arch-viles, mancubus, cherubs, ticks and trites, Vagary, Hell Knight, Hell Baron, The Guardian, Bruiser, Cyberdemon, Spider Mastermind, Mother Demon, The Maledict...all awesome.
personally I hope Doom 4 has everything Doom 3 had n more; bring in the pain elemental, Spider mastermind, gargoyles, the Mother Demon...and maybe some new ones. my friend was thinking the smaller versions of the spider mastermind seen in old doom games should have their own name, maybe the Arachnatrons or something.

This is fuckin' awesome. Superior design. I really love the skull look.

However given the brainy look of the both the original Mastermind and Arachnotron, and the brainy look of your Arachnotron, I think it might have been a little more appropriate from a literal perspective if you tried to give this guy's head a slightly more brainy look. I see that the cranium is really large which kind of covers it, but maybe if you opened up the top half of the back of the head in that machine area and gave it an exposed brain look it would fit the name slightly better.

That's just me nitpicking. Regardless this is really cool.

Thanks for the input. Much appreciated. I guess it could have been cool. Tried a rather similar approach the that one cenobyte bloke with the torn up throad held open by hooks. But a lot of the things that I tried simply didn't look good or made very little sense to me. Not that "sense" plays a big part in my designs, but I wasn't happy with my previous ideas.

This is definitely a step in the right direction for redesigning an iconic sort of boss from a popular series in need of a bit of a revamp. I do agree with the duel plasma guns, if anything, the scariest version of the Arachnotrons were in Doom 64 and they had the duel plasma too.

You really should get your hands on it, they had a good idea on how to re-imagine the enemies we all knew and loved from the original series and make them truly frightening. Your designs are quite brilliant in both regards of modernizing the series and keeping it terrifying.

You've really 'resurrected' the Mastermind here. Fantastic mixture between the mechanical and the organic, and I like how you've changed the ye-old brain-on-a-platform (which I used to think was pretty silly) to a more daunting appearance (like the centaur, as you described).

I am absolutely amazed at all the detail. I love how you shade metal and design the mechanisms... I could never dream of the complexity. XD The smokey effect which you apply to limbs further away is also very neat; gives a very creepy atmosphere.

I though he looked silly as well. Kind of like Krang from TMNT :'D Not that there's anything wrong with having a bit of humour in your designs. I do that as well, because fuck taking things too seriously.

Haha, definitely. I always enjoy a bit of humour. But only where it is fitting and due....the old Mastermind worked with Doom 1 and 2 because the games were in retrospect mostly humerous, but putting that same design into a different atmosphere might clash. XD
Agreed on taking things too seriously: that kinda gets boring. XD

Exactly. If you made Doom-monsters by the same design but with modern graphical capabilities the results would be pretty much on par with this [link]

Not that I have any problems withs serious tone if done properly. Silent Hill 2 for instance is sheer loveliness <3

We all have a long way to go. We're artists and we are never complete. Holy shit that was deep :D

This is a fucking fantastic redesign, and pure metal.

I have to say, however, on Brutal Doom, the Spider Mastermind gets a fucking autocannon (think GAU-8 with HEI rounds), making it even more of a threat than the Cyberdemon.
But still, if those Pulsecannons are anything like the BFG10K...

Indeed. First time I came across this gentle creature of nature in Brutal Doom it took my health and armor down from 200% down to 30% in a blink of an eye, leaving me running around the premise screaming "sorry I shot you mr. Spiderperson, my finger just slipped".

Oh, that moment when you play through Doom II, and you enter a room that has a bunch of Arachnotron's and TWO of these bastards. All I could hear when I entered that room was plasma and miniguns firing all around me, and me dying a lot.

Really like how you designed the Spider Mastermind. I was very disappointed that they didn't add any Arachnotrons or even a slight appearance of this guy onto Doom 3. They were some of the tougher enemies in the old Doom games, even on Normal mode. The way you designed this guy makes me think that they should have added him as one of the bosses on Doom 3, instead of the Guardian of Hell or that Spider Queen.

You just shove the soulcube up his rectum and be done with it. Not that he was hard to kill with conventional weapons as well. Sorry, lost my train of though :P

You deserve all those faves for making such awesome artwork. When I saw them, I was thinking to myself "Why didn't they use these designs for the enemies?"

And yeah, Spider Mastermind would be much better than Sabaoth by a long shot. When I was playing through the game, I was expecting to fight one after playing through Doom I and II, but when none showed up, I was very disappointed. Compared to the Cyberdemon, they were probably the toughest enemies to face, since their bullets would automatically home onto you and they fired a lot more bullets than the Cyberdemon's 'Three Rockets of Death'.

Indeed. With Cyberdemons you could just run around and dodge his rockets like a boss while you blasted him with the weapon of your choice. But with this bad boy, you just kidna had sit behind someone's fridge or something and pop out quickly to take a few cheapshots at him. Oh, good times <3
